Terramation: A Natural Way to Return to the Earth
Compassionate, Sustainable, and Dignified Care for Your Loved One
At Hoff Funeral & Cremation we’re honored to offer terramation — also known as natural organic reduction — a gentle, environmentally friendly alternative to traditional burial or cremation. This process allows the body to return naturally to the earth, becoming rich soil that nurtures new life.

We know this is a new concept for many people, so we’ve answered some of the most common questions families ask about terramation below.
What is terramation?
Terramation is a natural process that transforms the body into nutrient-rich soil.
Inside a secure vessel filled with organic materials such as wood chips and alfalfa, warmth and moisture allow nature’s microbes to gently complete the cycle of life. The result is clean, living soil — a beautiful way to give back to the earth.
How does the Terramation process work?
The body is placed in its own individual vessel with natural materials that support the transformation. Over 60 to 90 days, the combination of heat, airflow, and moisture allows organic decomposition to occur safely and naturally. Our licensed partner, Return Home, has a team of professionals that oversee each step to ensure the process remains respectful, secure, and carefully monitored.
How is Terramation different from burial or cremation?
Terramation offers a third choice — one that’s gentle on the planet. Unlike cremation, it doesn’t use flame or high energy, and unlike burial, it doesn’t require a casket, vault, or cemetery space. Terramation lets nature take its course in a safe, guided way, creating soil that gives back to life.
Is Terramation legal in Minnesota?
Yes. Minnesota legalized natural organic reduction in 2024, joining a growing number of states that recognize terramation as a dignified and lawful option. Our funeral home partners with Return Home, a Seattle based firm that focuses on terramation. Return Home was recognized by the National Funeral Directors association in both 2022 and 2024 with the “Best of the Best” award and is a licensed facility that meets or exceeds all state standards.
Where does Terramation take place, and who watches over the process?
Terramation occurs in a licensed, climate-controlled facility designed specifically for this purpose. Each person rests in their own vessel, cared for individually and respectfully. Our partner, Return Home and their facility team monitor the process from beginning to end to ensure it remains safe, peaceful, and dignified.
What happens to the soil after Terramation?
When the process is complete, the body has become rich, clean soil. Families may choose to receive the soil, use it for memorial plantings, or donate it to restoration or conservation projects. Many families find meaning in using the soil to plant trees or flowers that celebrate their loved one’s memory and create a place where they can gather and honor the family member that has died.
Is Terramation safe for the environment?
Yes. Terramation is one of the most environmentally friendly options available
today. It produces no harmful emissions, uses minimal energy, and avoids the chemicals used in traditional embalming. The process results in something beneficial — soil that helps restore and renew the earth.
Is Terramation respectful and dignified?
Absolutely. Every individual is treated with compassion and care throughout the process. Families can choose to hold a service or visitation beforehand, and we ensure every step is carried out with the same reverence as any other form of
final care.
How much does Terramation cost?
Terramation is typically similar in cost to cremation and less than a traditional burial. We believe in complete transparency and will provide a clear breakdown of all costs and options, so you can make an informed decision that reflects your values.
Can I preplan or prepay for Terramation?
Yes. Preplanning allows you to make your wishes known and provides peace of mind for your family. Our staff can help you set up a plan that fits your preferences and budget, ensuring your arrangements are secure and honored in the future.
Can families visit or participate in the process?
While the terramation vessel itself remains in a controlled environment, families may choose to hold a private gathering, blessing, or reflection before the process begins — or a soil return ceremony when it’s complete. We’re happy to help create a meaningful experience that feels personal to your family.
What faiths or beliefs support Terramation?
Terramation aligns with many beliefs that emphasize the natural cycle of life and care for creation. While perspectives may vary, families from all backgrounds have found comfort in the symbolism and sustainability of returning to the earth naturally.
