St. Charles, William H. "Bill" Norton, 80, of St. Charles died Tuesday July 31, 2007 at the Lewiston Villa. Bill was born September 5, 1926 in Winona to William and Matie (Rarup) Norton. He graduated from St. Charles High School in 1944. He served in the Army in the late 1940's, stationed in the Philippines. Bill was a mechanic; he worked for the railroad, Patterson Quarries and many years for Holz garage of Elba. He belonged to St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church and the St. Charles American Legion and Veterans of Foreign War Posts. Survivors include a sister, Pat Loftus of Rochester, a brother John Norton of Port Angeles, WA, 12 nieces and nephews, the family of his longtime special friend Margaret Garteski; her children Gloria (Van) Walters of Burlington, VT and Terry (Maribeth) Garteski of St. Charles, her eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers and his longtime special friend Margaret Garteski. The Funeral Mass will be 10:30 AM Monday at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church with the Rev. James F. Callahan officiating. Military honors will be conducted following the service by the St. Charles American Legion and Veterans of Foreign War posts. Friends may call from 5-8 PM Sunday at Hoff Funeral Home in St. Charles. They may also call one hour before services at the church on Monday.
