Warren Harding Shaw

December 30, 1920 — December 14, 2010

Winona, Warren Harding Shaw, 89, of Winona died Tuesday evening December 14, 2010 at his home following a lengthy illness. Warren was born December 30, 1920 near Byron to Alfred and Flora (Doe) Shaw. Warren's mother died when he was young and he was raised by his aunt and uncle near Adrian, MN. Growing up in the depression taught Warren to be frugal and repair or re-use everything. Warren had the mechanical talent to fix things and in particular to make replacement parts on his lathe. He played football in high school, joined the Civilian Conservation Corp and was sent to Lewiston. He then met the love of his life, Ethel Loppnow who he married on July 3, 1942 in Superior, Wisconsin. Warren had worked at the Superior shipyards. He later entered the U.S. Army and fought the Germans in Europe, where he was a tank driver. Following the war he worked for Swift Packing Company and H.J. Kramer Plumbing. Warren was known for his ability as a welder and a pipe fitter. He was a lifetime member of the Winona Sportsmen's Club, where he enjoyed trap shooting. He enjoyed hunting ducks and geese. In conversations with Warren you were bound to hear one of the following stories or sayings; The Christmas he received an orange and a harmonica, his Shetland pony Pearl and her mean streaks, at the age of 12 the bronco fell on him and broke his hip, "To make a long story somewhat shorter", "Play the hand you are dealt", "Do as much as you can as long as you can" and "When the going price of gas was five gallons for a buck". Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law David and Roseann Shaw of Winona, a sister-in-law Joan Shaw, three nephews and two nieces. Warren was preceded in death by his wife Ethel in 1995 a brother Eldon Shaw and a sister-in-law, Arlene Loppnow Wartenburg. Private family services will be held with burial following in Hillside Cemetery in St. Charles. Hoff Funeral and Cremation Service-Hansen Goodview Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements. Please share a memory of Warren at his on-line Guestbook and view his Tribute Video when it becomes available at www.hofffuneral.com. In Lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to the Winona County Humane Society or a charity of the donor's choice.
