Victor V. Bitu

Victor Vlasie Bitu, of Winona, died Monday, January 9, 2006, at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Wabasha after an illness of three months. He was born May 15, 1920 in Winona to Victor Z. and Elsie (Nelton) Bitu. Vic served his country as a paratrooper during two wars; World War II and the Korean War. Vic made three combat jumps while serving with the 503rd Airborne Division and was a member of the combat team that jumped on Corregidor in February 1945. He was awarded a Purple Heart and retired from the military with the rank of Captain. Vic earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Minnesota, where he led the Gopher cheerleading squad as rooter king. In 1951, he graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Master of Education degree. Vic was a soldier, professional ice skater, teacher and coach. Vic taught English and physical education in Italy, California, Nevada and Minnesota. He returned to his hometown and lived in Winona the past thirty years. Survivors include sister, Vanita Breza; brother, Jon (LaVonne) Bitu; nephews, Kevin (Anne) Bitu and Kirk Bitu; nieces Barbara (Jerry) Kiral and Vicki (David) Thrune; and nieces' families. Victor was preceded in death by his parents, brother Jenus, and brother-in-law John C. Breza.
