Vema Mae Urban

St. Charles, Vema Mae Urban, 91, of St. Charles died Wednesday, September 29, 2010 at Seasons Hospice in Rochester. . She was born April 1, 1919 in Pepin, Wisconsin to Clyde and Alcie (Davis) Hicks. She and Elrey Urban were married on November 18, 1944 in Dover. They moved to Beloit, WI in 1952, where Vema worked for Fairbanks Morris and retired from Regal Beloit Corporation. Vema enjoyed traveling and loved her many wonderful trips and her adventures at local casinos. In their retirement the couple wintered in Florida. In 1998 they returned to the area to live in St. Charles. She belonged to the Dover United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women, having served as its' president and treasurer. Vema served as president and treasurer of the St. Charles Senior Citizens and was honored as the Senior Citizens Gladiolus Days Queen in 2007. She also volunteered as a Winona County election worker. Elrey died July 20, 2002. Vema is survived by her daughter Pamela (Johnnie) Barrs of Dover, two grandchildren, Christopher (Faith) Barrs and Heather Barrs, a great-granddaughter Hailey Chester, two brothers, Duane (Phyllis) Hicks of Puyallup, WA and Orville (Carole) Hicks of Barron, WI, three sisters; Irma (George) Lindstedt of Barron, WI, Margie (Marvin) Fredrickson of Rice Lake, WI and Barbara (Walter) Petersen of South Beloit, IL and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, a brother Verdon, a sister Naomi and a nephew Danny. Funeral Services will be 2 PM Monday at Dover United Methodist Church with the Reverends Bruce Fredrickson and Heather E. Klason officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery in Dover. Friends may call on Sunday from 2-5PM at Hoff Funeral and Cremation Service in St. Charles. They may also call one hour before services at the church.
