Tom Thompson, Devoted Family Man of Faith 1951–2024
It is with profound sorrow and immense gratitude for his rich, well-lived life that we announce the passing of Tom Thompson. After a resilient battle with illness, Tom passed peacefully, surrounded by love and guided by his unwavering Christian faith. His journey ended in his beloved town of Winona, where he had been a cornerstone of community, generosity, and kindness.
Tom's infectious optimism and boundless energy were his trademarks, deeply felt by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. An avid golfer, passionate Minnesota Twins fan, cherished friend, amateur Abraham Lincoln historian, and enthusiastic boater on the Mississippi, Tom lived his life with a contagious spirit and an open heart.
Tom's commitment to service was unparalleled. Throughout his adult life, he was deeply involved in community service, finding profound joy and purpose in his work with Jail Ministry and various other causes. His spirit of giving and dedication to others was a beacon of hope and strength, a testament to his love for the Winona community.
Tom was a man of deep faith and a devoted member of Cornerstone Community Church, where he found great solace and fellowship. A successful career marked his professional life as the co-owner of Midtown Foods and, later, a rewarding stint in real estate, reflecting his knack for connecting with people and serving them sincerely.
Tom was a proud veteran who served his country in Vietnam at the tender age of 18. This pivotal experience deepened his appreciation for freedom—a value he held dear throughout his life, never taking for granted the privileges that come with being an American. After returning from service, Tom fully embraced the opportunities before him. He married Debbie, the love of his life, and pursued higher education at Winona State University through the GI Bill. Their union blossomed into a loving family, welcoming three children and later, three grandchildren, who brought immense joy and fulfillment to his life, a testament to his deep love for his family.
Tom's legacy is carried on by his beloved wife, Debbie; his children, Andy Thompson (Clarissa), Kristie O’Brien (Mathias), and Kerrie Mohr (Russ); his treasured grandchildren, Alana, Moses, and Talia; his father-in-law, Fred Wild, sister-in-law Laura Clay (Tom) and brother-in-law Warren, and his brothers, Pat (Jan), Dan (Bonnie), Jim (Jenny), Bill, and Pete (Jennifer), along with numerous nieces and nephews.
In celebrating Tom Thompson's life, we remember a man who cherished each moment, loved fiercely, and served generously. As we say goodbye, we also say thank you—for a life beautifully lived and shared. Tom's light and love will continue to inspire and guide us.
