(Sather) DeGroff, 101, of Houston, Minn. died on Saturday, June 4, 2011, at the Valley View Care and Rehab Center in Houston. Themis was born on January 18, 1910, at Looney Valley in rural Houston, Minn. She was raised at Looney Valley. Themis contracted Polio when she was 8 years old which left her in a leg brace for the remainder of her life. She graduated from Houston High School in 1927 and from Winona Business College in 1929. Themis worked for the U.S. War Department in Washington DC for ten years. While out East she also worked in the dress design industry. In 1943, Themis moved to Los Angeles, Cal. where she worked for Smith - Hughes Aircraft until her retirement. On January 1, 1950, she married Charles DeGroff. They were later divorced. In 1991, Themis moved to the Watkins Home in Winona and then to the Valley View Care and Rehab Center in Houston in 2008. She was an active member of her church in California. Themis enjoyed painting, playing bridge, participating in spelling bee's in her younger years and was a very accomplished seamstress. She is survived by her sister, Marjorie Skree of Houston; sister-in-law, Margie Sather of Houston; and by ten nieces and nephews and their families. Themis was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Verlie Sather; and brothers, Merton and Allen Sather. The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 11, at Looney Valley Lutheran Church in rural Houston, with the Rev. Jan King officiating. Burial will be in the Silver Creek Cemetery in rural Houston. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday at the church. Her family prefers memorials to the Looney Valley Lutheran Church.
