Sidney Rostad, 91, of Houston, died Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at Valley View Healthcare & Rehab in Houston while holding hands with his wife of 63 years, Laura. Sidney was born on November 18, 1920 in Yucatan Township to Nels and Olena (Eliason) Rostad. He was baptized in Black Hammer, MN on February 11, 1922 and comfirmed on April 26, 1936. Sidney attended school in Black Hammer then began farming with his father. He helped plant, cultivate, and harvest crops and also fed and cared for livestock. On September 9, 1942, Sidney began active duty with the United States Army. In his 3 years of active service, he traveled to Normandy and northern France and was awarded 5 battle stars and a good conduct medal. On August 6, 1948, Sidney was united in marriage to Laura Heyer in Decorah, IA. The couple lived in Houston their entire married life and were members of Cross of Christ Lutheran Church. Having a natural talent for mechanics, Sidney worked for various local garages as a mechanic. He also worked as a truck driver for Hectors Construction in Caledonia for over 20 years until his retirement. Sidney and Laura enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins, cooking doughnuts and other goodies, and gardening. Family was very important to Sidney, and he enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. Sidney is survived by his wife of over 63 years, Laura Rostad of Houston; children, Lorene (Randy) Richmond of Houston, Nancy Rostad of Houston, Audrey Thompson of Ham Lake, Myron (Sue) Rostad of Rochester, Elizabeth (Rob) Zwiebel of Peterson, and Rick (Gwen) Rostad of Houston; grandchildren, Jackie (Derek) Beeman, Amy (Fatir) Original, Sarah (Kamal) Franklin, Joey Rostad, Chelsea Rostad, Justin Rostad, Tyrah Rostad, Jenifer (Bill) Hansson, Kelsey (John) Schultz, Mat Zwiebel, Alyssa Rostad, and Becca Rostad; great-grandchildren, Jordon, Hailey, Shelby, Haley, Amber, Nathan, and Will; great-great-grandson, Brayden; daughter-in-law, Debbie Rostad of Winona. He is preceded in death by his parents; son, Kenneth Rostad; 5 brothers; 3 sisters. A visitation will be held from 4-7pm on Thursday, January 26, 2012 at Hoff Funeral & Cremation Service in Houston and also one hour prior to the service on Friday. Funeral service will be at 2pm, Friday, January 27, 2012 at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston with Reverend Lane Zaffke officiating. Burial will follow in Stone Church Cemetery with full military honors provided by the Houston American Legion Post #423 where he was a member.
