Rinaldo DiCenzo, 105, recently of Winona, MN died peacefully at Lake Winona Manor on Sunday, April 8, 2018 with family by his side.
A memorial service and internment will be held at 11:00am Saturday June 23, 2018 at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Medway, MA. A Celebration of Life for Angie & Rinaldo will follow at the First Unitarian Universalist Church in Milford.
Rinaldo, the fifth of seven children, was born February 10, 1913 in Valhalla, NY to Antonio and Rafaela (Faella) DiCenzo. On September 1, 1935 at 22 years old, Rinaldo was united in marriage to Angelina Gattozzi at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Milford. As newlyweds, Angie and Rinaldo first lived in a one bedroom house he built for them. They worked side by side for many years.
A self-made man with merely a 6th grade formal education, Rinaldo made the most of every day and every opportunity to improve himself and his family's situation. Living the liberties and opportunities America provided, he owned and operated four different small businesses including trash collection, insurance brokerage, a neighborhood grocery store (all three in Medway MA) and lastly a Boston MA liquor store.
Rinaldo lived and passed along life lesson mottos: "Whatever you choose to pursue, put your mind to it and be the best." "If something is worth doing, it is worth doing right." "Help those who are willing to help themselves." Rinaldo brought joy to others with his friendly manner and outward expressiveness. To quote a longtime friend: "Rinaldo never met a stranger."
In 1972, Angie and Rinaldo moved from Massachusetts to Tucson. In 1999, with the help of their family, Angie and Rinaldo moved to Atlanta to be near their daughters. Finally, in 2011, they moved to Winona to be close to their son.
Rinaldo is survived by children Marilyn (Bob) Wyzykowski of Spring Hill, FL, Louise Babel of Rocky River, OH, Rena (Hal) Greenlee of Huntsville, AL, and Rinaldo, Jr. (Kelly) DiCenzo of Tucson, AZ; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren and sister-in-law Christine Saunders. Rinaldo was preceded in death by Angie, his loving wife of 78 years, his parents, 5 brothers, sister and son-in-law Dr. John Babel, Jr.
The family prefers memorials and donations be directed to Lake Winona Manor, 865 Mankato Avenue, Winona, MN 55987.
