St. Charles, Richard "Dick" Spiczka, 78, of St. Charles died unexpectedly, Tuesday evening, October 20, 2009 at his home. Dick was born November 3, 1930 in Foley to Edward and Anna (Slomkowski) Spiczka. He was raised by his mother and his step-father Walter Taimi in Minneapolis, graduating from Minneapolis South High School in 1948. Dick served in the U.S. Marines during the Korean War and was involved in the Battle of Chosin Reservoir. He married Nancy Bensen on May 27, 1961. The couple made their home in Excelsior, MN from 1968 until moving to St. Charles in 2002 to be near their daughter. Dick had worked for Honeywell and as a realtor until owning and operating a painting business in Excelsior for many years. He was known for his 'devilish' sense of humor. Dick was an avid reader. He also enjoyed crossword puzzles, golf, fishing and bowling; and was an avid sports fan, following the Minnesota Twins, Vikings and Gopher teams. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his wife Nancy. He had been a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Knights of Columbus in Excelsior and the St. Charles Moose Lodge. Dick was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in St. Charles and had been active in his church while living in Excelsior. Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law Elizabeth "Liz" and Todd Grimes of St. Charles, a brother-in-law Roger "Cork" Cornell of Pine City, MN and several nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his loving wife Nancy of 48 years, his parents, sister Lorraine Cornell and brothers-in-law, James, Bill and Joel Bensen. A Funeral Mass will be 10AM Saturday at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church with The Reverend James F. Callahan and Deacon Leonard Fuller officiating. Burial will follow at St. Aloysius Cemetery in Elba. Friends may call from 5-8PM Friday at Hoff Funeral & Cremation Service. They may also call one hour before services at the church on Saturday.
