St. Charles, Orrin Benjamin Schafer, 82, or St. Charles died Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at Golden Living Center-St. Charles. Orrin was born November 11, 1927 in Altura to Herman and Elsie (Bittner) Schafer. He grew up in the St. Charles and Dover area and served in the US Army from February of 1954 through February of 1956. Orrin worked as farm manager for Hubbard Foods of Altura for more than 20 years until his retirement. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golf, playing cards, making puzzles, gardening and smoking his Swisher Sweets. Most of all Orrin liked to spend time with his children, grandchildren and great-granddaughter. He belonged to the St. Charles American Legion and served as chair of the Golden Living Center's resident council. Survivors include his six children; David (Patricia) Geerdes of Racine, Stacy (Tim) Williamson of Winona, Chris Schafer (Alisha DeCook) of Rochester, Brian (Vicki) Schafer of Chatfield, Shelly Schafer of Chatfield and Shiela Schafer (Andy) Burt of Dover, 18 grandchildren; Nikki and Brittany Geerdes, Alex, Brady and Devin Williamson, Dakota and Alyssa Schafer, Cole, Aliyah and Alivia DeCook, Danielle and Derek Bethel, Cassidy and Carter Loth, Hailey Schafer, Rebecca, Austin and Liz Burt, a great-granddaughter Payten, a brother Marvin (Jeanette) of Saratoga, two sisters Violet Balk of Winona and Inez Loppnow of St. Charles. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and three sisters. Funeral Services will be 11AM Monday at Hoff Funeral and Cremation Services in St. Charles with Chaplain Carol L. Shaffer of Seasons Hospice officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery in St. Charles with graveside military honors being conducted by St. Charles American Legion and Veterans of Foreign War Posts.
