Myra (Marion) Arlene McKay, age 96, of St Charles died Thursday evening December 12, 2024, at Mayo Clinic Hospitals, Rochester Methodist Campus.
Myra was born January 31, 1928, in rural Valley City, ND, to Albert and Lillian (Hoffman) Noeske. She graduated from Noltimier school and went on to nurses training at St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in Fargo, with additional training at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. Myra graduated as a registered nurse in 1949 and worked at various hospitals including Veterans Hospital in Long Beach, CA, Mercy Hospital in Denver, CO, and in North Dakota.
Myra and Hillis McKay were married September 27, 1952. They made their first home in Denver, CO, moving several times before settling in St. Charles, MN, in 1966 where Hillis was the high school principal. Myra was an active member of the St. Charles United Methodist Church and its women’s group. Myra also belonged to the ‘One for Fun’ Homemakers group. After raising her family, Myra worked at Camera Art in Lewiston for 11 years.
Myra loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed the Minnesota north shore, Grand Teton National Park and Whitewater State Park where she enjoyed hiking and photography. She was proud of having several photographs published in the Minnesota Weatherguide Calendars. When hiking became difficult, she took up painting and displayed her paintings at county fairs and the St. Charles Public Library. Her other hobbies included quilting, golfing, camping, playing dominoes, watching the Vikings and Gopher football games, and coffee with friends.
Myra loved her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her friends. She is survived by three sons and two daughters, Jeff (Sara) McKay of Owatonna, Jerry (Theresa) McKay of St. Charles, Jim McKay of Casper, WY, Joan (Dave) Schultz, of East Gull Lake, and Jill (Scott) Harkness of Rochester. Grandchildren Include Ryan (Mandy) McKay, Kyle (Devon) McKay, Katie McKay, Paul (Anna) McKay, Jim (Elisa) McKay, Erin (Taylor) Swenson, Andrew (Sandra) Schultz, Laura (Brian) Sheehan and Tess (Justin) Brown. Myra was blessed with 13 great-grandchildren, Quincy and Cora McKay, Lillian, Viola and Ivy Schultz, Hallie Sheehan, Gracelyn and Scottlyn McKay, Paige, Piper and Bennett Swenson, Collin McKay and Betsy Lou Brown.
Myra was preceded in death by her husband Hillis and her brothers Ralph Noeske and Gerald Noeske.
Funeral Services will be 11 a.m. Friday, December 20, 2024, at St. Charles United Methodist Church with the Reverend Gerhardt Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery in St. Charles. A visitation will be Thursday from 4-7 p.m. at Hoff Funeral Service in St. Charles.
