Milroy John Tollin

St. Charles, Milroy John "Roy" Tollin, 81, of St. Charles died Wednesday, March 17, 2010 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester. He was born August 18, 1928 in Winona to Milroy and Hazel (DeJarlais) Tollin. Roy was raised at Weaver and graduated from Winona High School in 1946. He served in the Army Air Force from 1946-49. Following his discharge from active duty he entered the Army Reserves, retiring in 1983 with the rank of Colonel. Roy and Pat Benson were married on March 21, 1953. Following active duty in the military he attended Winona State University, graduating with a degree in education. He later returned to college to receive his master's degree in education. Roy taught health, physical education, drivers education, math and history at St. Charles High School from 1953-1986. In 1954 Roy started the wrestling program, serving as head coach until 1971. He was assistant football coach and later head coach from 1977-1985. He served as Athletic Director until 1992. Roy also refereed high school wrestling and football. He was inducted into the Minnesota Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1999. He is survived by his wife Pat, two children; Rochelle (Terry) Fabian of Rockford, MN and Tom (Deanna) Tollin of St. Charles, six grandchildren; Jessica (Michael), Janel, Mark, Joshua, Joseph and Erin. He was preceded in death by his son Mike in 1992 and by his parents. Roy belonged to Faith Lutheran Church and was a member and Past Commander of the American Legion Post of St. Charles. Funeral services are 11AM Monday at Faith Lutheran Church in St. Charles with Reverend Steven McGinley officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery in St. Charles. Friends may call from 3-6 PM Sunday at Hoff Funeral and Cremation Service in St. Charles. They may also call one hour before services at the church. Military graveside honors will be conducted by the St. Charles American Legion and Veteran of Foreign War Posts.
