Merton Travis Sather

Houston, MN Merton T. Sather, 95, of Houston, MN, died Friday, March 7, 2008 at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center in LaCrosse, WI from complications of the flu. Merton was born September 18, 1912 to J. Alfred and Amanda (Stenberg) Sather on the home farm in Looney Valley, rural Houston, MN. He was baptized and confirmed at Looney Valley Lutheran Church, rural Houston. Merton attended Business College in Winona, MN for two years. He preferred being outside, so later farmed with his brother Allen on the home farm until 1950, when he moved to Oregon where he worked at a plywood mill for two years. He then moved to California where he worked at McKesson Wholesale Drug Co. for 25 years and later as a security guard in Los Angeles. February 5, 1955, Merton and Della Dugan, formerly of Rochester, MN, were married in Los Angeles. They were both active in the Wilshire Methodist Church. After Merton retired, they moved to Sun City, AZ where he was a security guard for Dell Webb. They lived in Sun City until Della's death in 1994. Merton moved back to Minnesota in 2000 and lived at Heritage Court until his 90th birthday when he moved into Valley View Nursing Home in Houston. Merton is survived by three sisters, Verlie Sather and Themis DeGroff both of Winona, MN, and Marjorie (Gifford) Skree of Houston, MN; sister-in-law Mrs. Allen (Marjorie) Sather of Houston, MN; 10 nieces and nephews, Richard and Marlene Sather of Houston, Dave and Karen Moses of Lake City, Robert and Judy Ledebuhr of Rochester, David and Cindy Sather of Edmond, OK, Steve and Sue Skree of Rochester, Jerry and Jeanne Skree of Inver Grove Heights, Mary Ann Dascher of Winona, Kathleen Skree of Minneapolis, Susan Skree of Minneapolis, Sherrie Skree Conroy of Ham Lake, and their families; and good friends Gary and Loretta Colgan and family of Scottsdale, AZ and Ruby Swenson of Houston. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Della, and his brother Allen Sather. The Memorial Service for Merton will be at 1:00PM on Wednesday, March 12 at Looney Valley Lutheran Church in rural Houston with the Reverend Jeff Forbes officiating. Burial will be in Sun City, AZ at a later date. Friends may call from 11am-1pm on Wednesday at Looney Valley Lutheran Church.
