Mary Ann Patterson, (Sun Lakes, AZ and Winona, MN) died peacefully on September 1, 2009, at Saint Anne Extended Health Care in Winona, MN. Mary Ann was born September 7, 1922, to Agnes (O'Connor) and Herbert C. Oslund in Minneapolis, MN. She grew up in Bald Eagle and White Bear Lake, MN, excelling in academics and developing life-long friendships. Mary Ann attended the College of Saint Teresa for two years and later graduated from the University of Minnesota. On August 14, 1943, Mary Ann married Ensign William A. Patterson, Jr. at the United States Naval Academy Chapel in Annapolis, MD. She was a proud Navy wife all of her life. Together, Mary Ann and Bill raised four children.Mary Ann loved the desert and mountains of Arizona and the lakes and north woods of Minnesota. She and Bill passed on to their children and grandchildren a love of the outdoors through trips to the cabin, canoeing, picnics, swimming, and other outdoor activities. Mary Ann also enjoyed traveling, golfing, and gatherings with friends and family. Mary Ann was a dedicated and competent homemaker and volunteer for many church and community organizations including the Red Cross, Regions Hospital and Chandler Hospital, the College of Saint Teresa Alumnae Association, PEO, and many other organizations over the years. Mary Ann provided her family with a strong foundation of faith, perseverance, stoicism, and an expectation of personal and professional excellence. "She did it her way." Survivors include her loving husband, William A., Jr.; son, William A. III, Ph.D. (Joan) of Northfield, MA and their children, Karen (Jeff) Greene, William A. IV (Cindy) Patterson and David (Sarah) Patterson, daughter, Ann E. (Thomas) Gibson, Ed.D. of Winona, MN, and their children, Thomas W. Gibson, Claire (William) Ragen, William E. Gibson and R. Drew (Alissa) Gibson, son, James H., JD (Jolanda) of Minneapolis, MN, and their children, Jenifer (Andy) O'Keefe, Jamie Ann Patterson, John Patterson and James M. Patterson, and son, Roger J., JD (Toni Lebel) of La Canada, CA, and their children, Kyle and Ryan Patterson; great-grandchildren, Ben and Finn Greene, Tyler, Luke and Ethan Patterson, Eleanor Patterson, Billy Ragen, John and Elizabeth Gibson and Siena Patterson; brother-in-law, Kenneth V. Deans; cousins, nieces and nephews, and many good friends. Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents, two infant siblings, sister-and-brother-in-law, Elizabeth (Patterson) and Allen Judd, and sister-in-law, Mildred Patterson Deans.A Memorial Mass will be offered on Saturday, September 5th, at 10:00 a.m. at Saint Mary of the Angels Chapel, (corner of Vila and Wabasha) in Winona, MN, with the Reverend Roy E. Literski officiating. Interment will take place at a later date in Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN. Friends and family may call one hour prior to the service at church on Saturday.
