Marvin J. Carlson, 91, died Saturday, December 6, 2003 at the Lewiston Villa in Lewiston, MN. Marvin was born June 17, 1912 in Gothenburg, NE to Henning and Selma (Peterson) Carlson. He married Aletha Hongerholt on November 2, 1943 in Peterson, MN. Marvin came from Nebraska to this area due to his ability and speed at corn husking or picking corn by hand. Marvin was a life long farmer with his wife in Altura, MN. The farm was Marvin's life. Not only was the farm his livelihood but also his enjoyment. He thoroughly enjoyed milking cows, welding and carpentry work on the farm. Marvin is well known for his technique of utilizing nature with his farming chores. The phase of the moon and clustering of birds on a wire are just a couple of nature's signs that would alert Marvin to schedule chores on the farm. Marvin was a devote Christian and was a member of Jehovah Ev. Lutheran Church in Altura where he had been an Elder for many years. Survivors include his wife, Aletha; one son, John Carlson of Rochester, MN; four daughters, Mary (Irrold "Bud") Hanson of Rochester, MN, Betty (Ralph) VanHouten of Byers, CO, Jane (Paul) Carlson of Eden Prairie, MN and Arlene (LaVerne) Nelson of Altura, MN; 9 grandchildren; one step-granddaughter; and 9 great-grandchildren. His parents, two brothers, Arthur and Floyd and one sister, Anna, preceded Marvin in death.Funeral services are planned for 11:00am Wednesday, December 10, 2003 at Jehovah Ev. Lutheran Church in Altura, MN with the Reverends David A. Fischer and Michael A. Lindemann officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at Hoff Funeral Homes - Lewiston Chapel on Tuesday from 4-8:00pm and also one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.
