Marjorie E. (Schmidt) Baier

Marjorie Esther Baier (Schmidt) passed away Tuesday, November 21, 2023, at the Chosen Valley Care Center in Chatfield, Minnesota. Born in Fountain Township, Fillmore County, November 29, 1928, daughter of William and Lottie (Raabe) Schmidt, Marjorie grew up in the Wykoff area attending country school and graduating from Wykoff High School in 1946.

After graduating high school, Marjorie attended Preston Teacher Training Department in 1947, and in 1967, she received her B.S. in education from Winona State College. She was employed by the rural schools of Fillmore and Olmsted Counties as well as Chatfield Public Schools where she taught for 34 years. In 1981, she fulfilled her lifelong dream of becoming a nurse and graduated from Rochester Community College with an Associate Degree in nursing.

Marjorie married George Herman Baier on June 8, 1950, at Immanual Lutheran in Wykoff, Minnesota. Following George’s military service, they made their home in Chatfield, Minnesota and welcomed their son, Stephen Mark Baier, in February of 1957.

Marjorie’s faith was an important part of her life. She was active at Immanuel Lutheran Church of Wykoff and Chatfield Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School and participated in many circles and shared her love of music. She was an active member of Red Hats and REAM (Retired Educators Association of Minnesota), SEREAM (Retired Educators Association of Southeast Minnesota), and RARE (Rochester Area Retired Educators). Marjorie was an avid reader, loved to travel, and enjoyed social times with friends and family. One of her greatest joys was spending time with Stephen and his wife, Beth, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Majorie is survived by her son, Stephen Baier (Beth), sister, Bernice Stender (Paul), two grandchildren, Katie LaPlant (Jay) and Adam Baier, and great grandchildren, Jordan and Chloe LaPlant, many nieces and nephews, and dear friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, George; parents; brothers, Raymond Schmidt, and Marvin Schmidt; sister, Charlotte Tammell.

Memorial Service will take place on November 27, 2023, at 11 a.m. at Chatfield Lutheran Church with a visitation prior to the service from 9-11 a.m. Memorials preferred to Good Earth Village, Immanual Lutheran Church Cemetery Fund, Chatfield Lutheran Church, or Alzheimer’s Association.

The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the devoted staff of caregivers at Chosen Valley Care Center for the love and care given to Marjorie during her time there as a resident.
