Margaret "Mary" Buscovick

Margaret 'Mary' Buscovick, 98, of Winona died Sunday, August 22, 2010, at St. Anne Extended Health Care in Winona surrounded by her children.Mary was born July, 7, 1912, in Winona, Minn., to Joseph J. and Margaret 'Ellen' (Burke) Martin. She attended elementary school in Winona, and graduated from Cathedral High School. She was the grand-daughter of George Martin, from the Tyrol area of Austria, who walked over the Alps carrying a scythe over his shoulder. The scythe was later cut into pieces, inserted into a wooden box and used as a sauerkraut cutter which the family still has. Mary's grandfather George was one of the stonemasons who helped build the Pickwick Mill. Mary is the last surviving member of a wonderful long chain of people that started in 1897 when her parents were married in Rushford, Minnesota.When Mary was young she worked at the Candy Box, a popular downtown restaurant in Winona. She also modeled clothes for department stores in Winona. She also worked at the Owl Motor Company where she met Tom Buscovick. They were married on October 24, 1936, and together they raised seven children, and were married for 52 years. Mary was a loving mother and grandmother.Mary was an active member of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. She enthusiastically participated in many church activities. Mary's watermelon and dill pickles would often be sold before they could be put out at the Fall Bazaar at Cathedral. Mary also quilted with a quilt circle at Cathedral.She had a beautiful voice and could play the piano by ear. She encouraged all of her children to take piano lessons. She sang with the Winona Choral and the Sweet Adelines.Mary was also an avid fisherwoman accompanying her husband Tom out on the Mississippi and up to Canada to catch fish. She was a dedicated gardener. For many years she and her husband grew vegetables, and she always had a beautiful flower garden.Mary is survived by her seven children. Mary Kay (Jack) McElroy of Kremmling, CO, Thomas (Mary Pat) Buscovick of Auburn, Calif., Carol (Gene) McCluskey of Custer, South Dakota, Paul Buscovick of Portland, Oregon, John (Vivian) Buscovick of Gunnison, Colorado, Helen DeBerard of Rochester, MN, and Margaret (John) Flesner of Glenwood Springs, Colo.; twelve grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and eleven brothers and sisters.A Funeral Mass will be offered on Monday, August 30th, at 1:30pm, at the Chapel of Our Lady at St. Anne Extended Health Care in Winona with the Reverend Thomas Niehaus officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Winona. Visitation will be held on Sunday at Hoff Funeral and Cremation Service Hansen Goodview Chapel from 5-7:00pm where there will be a Christian Prayer Service at 7:00pm. Visitation will also be one hour prior to the service at St. Anne's on Monday. The family kindly suggests memorials may be directed to Winona Area Catholic Schools. A Memorial Mass is also being planned for a later date.
