Winona, MNMadeline Charlotte Gudmundson, 84, of Petoskey, MI, and formerly of Utica, MN, died Thursday, June 1, 2006 at Community Memorial Hospital in Winona, MN. Madeline was one of ten children born on February 23, 1922 to Carl and Emma (Saheim) Thompson at the homestead in rural Houston County, MN. She attended country school and graduated from Rushford High School in 1940. Madeline took various courses in business and went to cooking school at the University of Minnesota. She worked all her life in various food service positions including White Castle, catering, and was a district coordinator of the Lewiston School lunch programs, where she especially enjoyed baking fresh bread daily for the students. In the late 40's, Madeline married Ervin Streier in St. Paul, MN. She later married Gynther Gudmundson in 1966 at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lewiston, MN and they made their home in Utica, MN. Together they ran G&M Construction and The Lunch Wagon. They enjoyed serving at many auctions. Gynther died March 18, 1986. Madeline was always active in her church. She was a member of the Dorcas Society and sang in the choir as long as she was able. She was well known for her poppy seed coffee bread served at many Easter breakfasts over the years. For her retirement years, Madeline moved to Petoskey, MI and was very active in promoting the new Petoskey mission, Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, and was a member of the Ladies Society. In 2003, she moved to Good Shepard Lutheran Home in Rushford, MN. Madeline was a wonderful person and will be dearly missed. She is now in her heavenly home with Jesus, her Savior.Survivors include two sons; Douglas (fiancé Pat) Streier and Larry (Sharon) Gudmundson, one daughter; Georgia (Paul) Manthei, seven grandsons; Shane, Adam, and Nathan Gudmundson, Joel (Ebony), Aaron, and Jesse Manthei, and Jon Streier, one granddaughter; Jill Streier, one sister; Lillian Reps, three brothers; Martin, Clifford (Mathilda), and Harold (Beverly) Thompson, six sister-in-laws; Irene, Florence, and Vivian Thompson, Vernes Gudmundson, Arlene Streier, and Margie Newberger, two brother-in-laws; Adolph (Frances) and Joe Henry (Georgia), and numerous nieces and nephews.Madeline was preceded in death by her parents; husband Gynther; four brothers; Olaf, Henry, Carl Jr., and Orlin, and a sister, Evelyn Johnson.The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, June 6, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lewiston, MN. The Reverend Michael Lindemann will be officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Utica, MN. Friends may call from 5-8 PM on Monday, June 5, at Hoff Funeral Homes - Lewiston Chapel and also one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the church.
