RUSHFORD, MINN. - Llewellyn "Lewie" D. Benson, 68, of Rushford, Minn. died surrounded by his family on Thursday, February 19, 2009, at his home. Lewie was born on July 7, 1940, in Fillmore County, Minn. to George and Bertha (Olson) Benson. He was raised on Oian Ridge near Peterson, Minn. Lewie graduated from Peterson High School in 1958. On June 23, 1962, he married Nancy Laumb. The couple moved to Rushford where they lived all of their married life. Lewie worked for Ace Telephone for 36 years, retiring in 2005. He was a member of Rushford Lutheran Church. Lewie was an avid Minnesota Vikings and Twins fan and enjoyed politics, caring for his lawn, and spending time with his family. Lewie is survived by his wife, Nancy: two daughters: Renee (Wayne) Bergo of Decorah, Iowa, and Michele Benson of Rushford; six grandchildren: Shauma (Brad) Meyer, Jeremy Olson, Thea Kennedy, Tanner Olson, and Chloe and Kylie Bergo; two great-grandchildren: Grace and Sophie Meyer ; one sister, Lila Overby of Austin, Minn.; one brother, Arlyn Benson of Rushford, Minn.; four step-grandchildren: Jessica Dutka, Alyssa Christianson, and Ryker and Lucas Bergo; and by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers-in-law: Arnold Overby, Jim Porter, and Jerry Laumb; one niece, Telli Rae Sodansky; and by one nephew, Joey Laumb. The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 24, at Rushford Lutheran Church in Rushford with the Rev. Roger Michaelson officiating. Visitation will be at Rushford Lutheran Church on Monday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. Lewie's family prefers memorials to be directed to the Mayo Clinic for Heart Research.
