Leslie Hilbert Nelson

Leslie Hilbert Nelson, age 89, of Winona, Minnesota died Friday, January 15, 2016 during a brief stay at Lake Winona Manor.

Les was born May 24, 1926 to Hilbert and Martha (Neumann) Nelson in Altura, Minnesota. After graduation from Lewiston-Altura High School he joined the Navy and served in Guam, South Pacific. He attended Dunwoody Institute and was employed by Watkins Products for over 42 years as a millwright. He also instructed evening welding courses at the Winona Vocational School for many years.

He was united in marriage to Anah Goss in 1949. They later divorced. They had three children: Lee, Lynn and Nancy.

Les was a member of the First Congregational Church since 1966. He was a 60-year member of the Masonic Fraternity, belonging to Lodge #18 of Winona, the Scottish Rite and Osman Shrine. He enjoyed trout fishing, playing cards, laughing and spending time with his family and friends. He was known for a wink and his whistle.

He is survived by his children: Lee Nelson of Eagan, Minnesota; Lynn (Dale) Engrav; and Nancy Jensen all of Winona, Minnesota. Three grandchildren: Paul, Ava and Karalyn Jensen.

Leslie was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters: Dorothy (Herb) Schladinske; Avis (Jack) Clay; and Audrey (John) Karsten/Degnan.

Memorial service will be at 2:00 pm on Saturday, January 23, 2016 at the First Congregational Church in Winona with a visitation starting at 12:00 pm prior to service, the Reverend Howard "Howie" Tobak presiding. A private family interment will be held at a later date.

The family requests memorials be directed to the First Congregational Church of Winona or the Masonic Cancer Center of Minnesota.
