Leon W. Knapp, 88, died Wednesday, January 24, 2007, at Winona Community Memorial Hospital. Leon Wright Knapp was born June 2, 1918 in Utica Township, Winona County, MN, to Wright and Jennie (Sidway) Knapp. He attended schools in Fremont and St. Charles, MN. Leon was a farm hand to several farmers of the Lewiston area including Bjarne Melbo, LaVerne Peterson Sr. and the Paul, John and Steve Nahrgang family. In retirement Leon moved to Winhaven Court in Winona and became a very familiar face in his community. He enjoyed his retirement and will be missed by all who got to know him. Leon was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church at Silo.Survivors include his sister, Sarah "Sally" Gretillat of Belmond, IA; nephew, Donald (Gerry) Barber of Radcliff, IA; and several grand nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Ralph Sidway and Leonard Knapp, nephew, Dennis Barber and niece, Betty Wnuk.Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 27, 2007, at 10:00am at Immanuel Lutheran Church at Silo with the Rev. William Meilner officiating. Burial will be in the Lewiston Public Cemetery. Friends may call at Immanuel Lutheran Church at Silo on Friday from 3-7:00pm and also one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.Leon was baptized into the Christian Faith in his retirement. He was confident in Christ's forgiveness and promise of heaven.
