ST. CHARLES, MINN. - Leon L. Kieffer, 87, of St. Charles died on Saturday, August 8, 2009, at the Golden Living Care Center in St. Charles, Minn. Leon was born on April 23, 1922, in Winona, to Andrew and Helen (Doyle) Kieffer. He grew up in the Altura and Elba area. Leon farmed for three years on the family's home farm. He served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946, in the South Pacific. On August 19, 1947, Leon was united in marriage with Fern Reps. He moved south of Utica, Minn. where he farmed for many years. In 1978, Leon moved to St. Charles and continued farming. He was a member of the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, St. Charles American Legion, St. Aloysius Society in Elba, Utica School Board, Utica Creamery Board, Twin Valley Ag Board, and was an active adult leader in the 4-H. Leon is survived by his wife Fern; five sons: Ronald Kieffer of Utica, David (Gay) Kieffer of St. Charles, Kenneth Kieffer of Utica, Gary (Linda) Kieffer of Utica, and Dale (Nancy) Kieffer of Dover; three daughters: Darlene Kieffer of Winona, Cheryl (Tom) Nelson of Aurora, Colo., and Barb (Mike) Nelson of Oshkosh, Wis.; 16 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Frances Goodrich of St. Charles, and Lorraine Doehling of Rollingstone; and by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Cecil, two sisters, Margaret and Phyllis, daughter-in-law, Debra, and a granddaughter, Bridgette. There will be a Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 13, at the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in St. Charles, with the Rev. James Callahan officiating. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery in St. Charles, with Military Honors by the St. Charles American Legion. Friends may call at the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, and one hour prior to the service on Thursday.
