LaVerne George Cornwell, 94, of Houston, died Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at Valley View Healthcare & Rehab in Houston.LaVerne was born at home in Honey Creek, Wisconsin on June 1, 1917 to George and Florence (Preston) Cornwell. On June 29, 1942, he was united in marriage to Arlene Beach at South Ridge Evangelical Parsonage in Winona County. Together, the couple enjoyed relaxing on Saturday nights with their neighbors, planting gardens, playing cards, and working on their dairy farm. In February 2011, LaVerne and Arlene were crowned the Valentine's Day prince and princess at Valley View Healthcare in Houston. He was always willing to lend a helping hand, and he would give the shirt off his back to someone in need. An honest, hardworking man, LaVerne treasured his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Whenever he would see them, his face would light up with a smile. LaVerne is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Arlene; daughters, Darlene Wolter of Holmen, WI, Sharon (Leonard) Buege of Pickwick, Donna (Ian) Young of Houston, and Karen (Jake) Krumrie of Houston; son, Arthur "Sonny" Cornwell of Houston; sister, Violet Brundidge of Stevens Point, WI;14 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. LaVerne will also be missed by his dogs. He is preceded in death by his parents; son, Lawrence Cornwell; grandson, Myles "Butch" Cornwell; and brothers, Orville and Connie Cornwell.Visitation will be held from 5-8pm on Monday, July 11, 2011 at Hoff Funeral & Cremation Service in Houston and also one hour prior to the service at church. Funeral service will be at 11am on Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Nodine with Reverend Dennis Harbach officiating. Interment will be in Hiler Cemetery in Nodine.
