LaVern Joseph Scherbring, 69, of Rollingstone, passed away peacefully Thursday, January 12, 2017 with family by his side at Lake Winona Manor. He was born on May 25, 1947 in Winona to Irvin and Verna (Pronschinske) Scherbring. LaVern was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church his entire life & graduated from Holy Trinity High School in 1965. He worked for a short while after graduation and then was drafted into the United States Army as a MP. After returning from Vietnam, he met the love of his life, Janet Kreckow. They were married on September 18, 1971. LaVern worked at the feed mill in Rollingstone for 32 years and then went to work at Cenex Harvest States where he retired. LaVern was an active man in the community as a volunteer firefighter with the Rollingstone Fire Dept. for 26 years where he served as chief for several years. LaVern was also Co-Founder of the Rollingstone First Responders & was an active member for many years. For more than a decade he served as a State Fire Warden. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, being on his family's farm, going to auctions with Janet, and spending time with all of his family. His grandchildren were his pride & joy. LaVern was a proud veteran & enjoyed visits with his Army buddies. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Janet; daughters, Michelle (Troy) Kieselhorst of Rollingstone and Emily (Jason) Barkeim of Lewiston; grandchildren, Brittnie, Blaine, Olivia, and Alaina; siblings, LeRoy (Diannia) Scherbring of Minnesota City, Dale (Shirley) Scherbring of Winona, Lorraine (John) Brinkman of Lake City, and Dolores (Bill) Bursten of Holmen, WI; many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents, Irvin and Verna. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Jan. 20, 2017, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Rollingstone, with Reverend Adam McMillan officiating. Following the Mass, military honors will be rendered by the American Legion Leon J. Wetzel Post #9. A visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 19 at Hoff Celebration of Life Center, Goodview, and one hour prior to Mass at the church. Interment will be at a later date.
