LaVern Scharmer

LaVern Scharmer, 78, born on December 21, 1945, in Winona, Minnesota, passed away on May 22, 2024 at Sauer Memorial Home in Winona, MN. He was the cherished son of Henry and Arvilla Scharmer. LaVern held a deep-rooted connection to the Winona community, graduating from Winona High School in 1963.

Following his graduation from Winona State University with a bachelor's degree in Mathematics and a minor in Physics, LaVern devoted his career to his family's businesses, Winona Ready Mix, and Winona Excavating. LaVern also worked at River States for 17 years selling Freightliner trucks. He has been a prominent figure in the Winona community for decades. Throughout his life, he owned several businesses in town. His commitment to hard work and service was further exemplified in his directorial role at the Winona D.A.C during his retirement years.

LaVern was previously married to Diane Petz for 26 years, with whom they had two children, Jon and Jeff. They later divorced. On December 14, 1995 he married Susan Johnson, his partner in life's grand adventures. He lived a life filled with love, joy, and shared moments with Susan.

In his personal life, LaVern found joy in racing cars on dirt tracks, with his number 22 car becoming a symbol of his passion for speed and competition. LaVern loved playing softball for Winona Ready Mix. He was a well-known pitcher in the area playing in tournaments throughout MN and Western Wisconsin. LaVern was a long-time member of the Westfield Golf Course. He enjoyed playing in Men's League, but loved the adrenaline of playing in tournaments. Known for his wit and warmth, LaVern had a talent for bringing out the best in others, always offering sincere advice and support. He took pride in his community and actively contributed his time and efforts as a trustee and treasurer at the Winona Elks Lodge #327 and as a member of the Goodview Activity Group, showcasing his dedication to helping others.

LaVern will be deeply missed by his wife, Susie; sons, Jon (Edward), Jeff (Joan); grandchildren, Katelyn, Emily "E.J.", Gabriella; great-grandchildren, Teddy, Beau, Freddie, George, Larry; siblings, Loie (Jeff), Lee, and Loren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Arvilla.

Memorials are preferred to the Winona D.A.C.

Memorial Services will take place on Saturday, June 1, 2024 at Faith Lutheran Church in Goodview, MN at noon. Visitation will begin at 9a.m. until the start of the service. LaVern will be laid to rest at Woodlawn Cemetery in Winona, MN.
