RUSHFORD, MINN. - Karrol Sigurd Jaastad passed away on Nov. 22, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Home after a brief illness. Born on September 13, 1910, to parents Sigurd Endre and Gusta (Knutson) Jaastad, he was a life-long resident of Rushford. Karrol graduated from Rushford High School in 1927 as valedictorian of his class after having completed his 4 years of high school in 3 years. He then joined his older brother, Norman, in operating the family business, Jaastad Hardware. Norman had entered the business on the death of their father in 1923. In March of 1934 he married Ella Wermager of Spring Grove. In the early 1950's, Ella joined Karrol in operating Jaastad Hardware at the corner of Mill and Jesse. In 1975 they retired and sold the business to Paul and Jeanine Engrav. Karrol became a resident of Good Shepherd in 1990, shortly after the death of his beloved wife, Ella.Karrol was a life-long member of Rushford Lutheran Church and a long-time member of Mystic Star Chapter, No. 93, O. E. S. During his business years he was a member of the Lions' Club, and Commercial Club, and served on the City Council. An avid golfer, he was a member of the Ferndale Country Club. At nearly 60 years of age, he became a pilot and aircraft owner. Many friends and acquaintances had their first ride in a small aircraft with Karrol. He and Ella enjoyed travels throughout the country in their plane, as well as summers at their cottage on Long Lake in Northwestern, Wisconsin. His parents, wife Ella, brothers Norman and Axel, and sisters Margaret and Ruth preceded Karrol in death. He is survived by sister Sygne Adams of Alexandria, Virginia, sons Sigurd and Rollie of Colorado, daughter Kay Ellwein of Lake Forest, Illinois, 7 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.The family requests memorials be directed to Good Shepherd Lutheran Home.There will be a graveside service for Karrol at the Rushford Lutheran Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 29, 2005. Following the service, friends and relatives will be gathering at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford for lunch and fellowship.
