Jospeh J. Rivers

Joseph J. Rivers, 88, died Tuesday, September 6, 2005 at St. Anne Extended Care in Winona, MN. Joe was born November 19, 1916 in Winona, MN to Joseph Edward and Cecilia (Hames) Rivers. Joe attended St. Thomas Cathedral School and graduated from Cotter High School in 1934. He received his B.S. degree from St. Mary's University in 1938 and later obtained his masters degree from Winona State University. He also attended classes at the University of Minnesota. Joe taught in Minnesota Public Schools for 25 years at Foley, Kenyon and Lewiston, MN. Later he worked as a computer programmer for Land-O-Lakes in St. Paul, MN. Joe retired in 1981 and returned to Winona. Joe was a member of Cathedral of Sacred Heart and charter member of the Serra Club. He was also a member of the Winona County Historical Society and was a driver for the Winona County Social Services. Survivors include several cousins and numerous God children.A Funeral Mass will be offered on Friday, September 9, 2005 at 1:00pm at Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Rev. John Sauer officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday where the Serra Club will recite the Rosary at 12:30pm. Pallbearers will be Mike, Jack, Peter and Joe Kertzman and Mike and Don Rivers.Memorials may be directed to the Cathedral of Sacred Heart step repair fund or the Donor's choice.
