John Robert Jore

October 8, 1930 — March 16, 2014

HOUSTONJohn Robert Jore, 83 of Houston, died in his son's home on Sunday, March 16, 2014. As his health declined, Robert began narrating his own obituary:I was born October 8, 1930 at the hospital in La Crosse to Emma (Sanden) and Ole Jore. I attended lower Sheldon grade school, and my aunt Nettie Jore was my teacher. I went to high school in Houston and played trombone in the band. I can say I graduated 5th in the class and my twin brother 4th. I went to Luther College in the fall of 1948 to study History, but after 2 years, I returned to the farm, as my father was sick with Leukemia.I married Grace Marilyn Morken on October 3, 1954 at the Stone Church. I was drafted in the Army and was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska at Fort Richardson. I returned home almost one year later for the birth and death of my first born son, Thomas Robert. I was blessed with a second son, Douglas Paul, 8 years later.I was a faithful man. I trusted in the Lord, farming for 65 years. I saw many changes in this industry and in these last years, worried about the dramatic changes in the weather, markets, and inputs. As a lifelong member of the Lutheran church, I was a Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent. I was on the Stone Church Cemetery Board for 50 years, giving me an avenue to support my love of heritage and history.I was a member of the Houston Development Committee, bringing the current sewer system to our community, and the Ace Cooperation building to town. I was also a member of the Farm Bureau and Houston County Historical Society. I traveled with my wife and son to many beautiful places in the country, Canada, and Norway. I found great pleasure in the simplicity of the beautiful things around me.I am survived by my wife of almost 60 years, Grace; son, Douglas (Mary) Jore of Houston; grandchildren, Joseph, Bree, and Therese Jore; identical twin brother, Rolf (Marilyn) Jore of Caledonia; sisters-in-law, Thelma (Ralph) Johnston and Marilyn Jore; and 14 nieces and nephews. I was preceded in death by my infant son; granddaughter, Rachel Elizabeth, and brother, Roger Jore.Pallbearers will be my nephews: David Jore, Daniel Jore, Jim Jore, John Jore, Brian Jore, Steven Johnston, and David Johnston. Honorary pallbearers will be my cousin, Laurel Oien; lifelong neighbors and friends, Wayne Olson and Howard Solie. I was loved and nurtured through the final 6 months of my life by my son and his young family in their home. Crystal Lewiston was a tireless, kind, gentle, and always available caretaker for me and my family, and I called her my friend.A gathering of family and friends will be held from 5-7pm on Tuesday, March 18 at Hoff Funeral & Cremation Service in Houston and also one hour prior to the service. Memorial service will be held at 11am on Wednesday, March 19 at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston with Reverend Lane Zaffke officiating. A balloon release and full military honors will follow the service, and private graveside services will be held later in Stone Church Cemetery. Please share a memory of Robert with his family and view the video tribute when it becomes available at www.hofffuneral.com.
