John Francis Nintemann, age 91, of St. Charles, died on Friday, October 11, 2024 at Chosen Valley Care Center.
John was born on Monday, October 17, 1932, in Dover Township, MN, to John Herman Nintemann and Ellen Bridget (Burke) Nintemann. John graduated from St. Charles High School in 1950 as class salutatorian and was a member of 4H and FFA. John enrolled at the University of Minnesota School of Agriculture in 1951 and graduated in 1953 with a two-year degree. In 1953, John was drafted and served in the U.S. Army as a medic through 1955. After his service, John graduated from the University of Minnesota St. Paul with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and World Agriculture in 1962. He spent his career as a farmer raising hogs and beef cattle and growing corn, soybeans, oats and alfalfa.
John was active in the community, serving on the St. Charles Public School Board (1964-1976), as Director and President for Greenway Cooperative Board (1970-1973, 1973-1976), on the People’s Energy Cooperative Board (1997-2012), and as Fire Warden for Winona County (1996-2016). He was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church since the 1960s and served as an usher, lector and greeter. John was an adult volunteer with the Winona County 4-H program for 25 years and a member of the St. Charles Moose Lodge, American Legion (Post 551 Eyota, MN), University of Minnesota Alumni Association, Catholic United Financial, Winona County Farm Bureau, and FarmHouse Fraternity.
John was a devoted father and grandfather, and loved visiting with family members and following his grandchildren’s adventures. He was everyone’s best friend and never met a stranger. He enjoyed meeting people and discussing current events with anyone he met. He was also a lover of classic tractors, cats, and coffee. In retirement, he collected antiques and attended auctions, building a collection of over 50 antique tractors. John enjoyed riding his John Deere lawn mower around the farm and driving his Farmall MTA, which was the first tractor he bought for his farm. He loved planting tulips in the fall and red geraniums in the spring.
John is survived by his three daughters Terri Nintemann (Vince Kiernan), Cheryl Nintemann, and Karen (Jeff) Hartman; his grandchildren Michael (Anne) Hartman, Morgan Hartman, Emily Kiernan, and Matthew Kiernan; his sisters Rosemary Tribulato and Rita (Ron) Croone; and his nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Janice Alena (Blair) Nintemann and his parents John Herman and Ellen Bridget (Burke) Nintemann.
