John "Howard" Benson, 83, of Houston, died Friday, December 30, 2005 at the Valley View Nursing Home in Houston. He was born on November 27, 1922, in LaCrosse, Wis. to John and Lillian (Abrahamson) Benson. Howard was raised in Houston, and graduated from Houston High School. He attended the University of Minnesota. Howard served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, where he was a Hospital Corpman. He married Doris Sanden on July 14, 1951. Howard worked as a carpenter for I.G. Iverson for many years and built many houses in Houston. He was a member of the Arnet - Sheldon American Legion Post in Houston, Valley View Nursing Home Board, Houston City Council and was the mayor of Houston. His interests included golfing and traveling with Doris. He is survived by his wife Doris and one sister, Amy Houge of Richfield, Minn. Howard was preceded in death by one nephew, John Houge. There will be a memorial service for Howard at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 22, 2006, at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston, with the Rev. Lane Zaffke officiating. Burial of Howard's cremated body will be in the Swede Bottom Cemetery in Houston. Friends may call from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service on Saturday.
