James "Jim" Mathew Potter, 82, of St. Charles, died Sunday, March 20, 2011 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester.Jim was born September 7, 1928 in St. Charles to Mathew and Lucinda (Pierce) Potter. On July 9, 1950 he married Phyllis Holtegaard. He owned Jim's Red Owl in St. Charles for 17 years, worked for Art Collier for 12 years and while in high school, he worked for Les Schaber, all in the grocery business. Jim was a member of the St. Charles Moose Lodge and was on the Winona County Fair Board for many years. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed bowling and playing cards. Jim also enjoyed watching various sports teams, especially the Minnesota Gophers.Jim is survived by his wife, Phyllis; one daughter, Julie (Steve) Herrick; two grandsons, T.J. and Cody Herrick; one sister, Helen Murphy of St. Charles; and many nieces and nephews.He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.A Funeral Service will be held 2 p.m., Thursday, March 24, 2011 at Hoff Funeral & Cremation Service with the Reverend Steve McGinley officiating. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery.
