Rochester, James Arnold "Jim" Bertelsen, 83, of Rochester died Friday April 22, 2011 at his home. Jim was born November 2, 1927 in New Ulm to Arnold and Wilma (Smith) Bertelsen and attended New Ulm Catholic Schools. He was a professional drummer for several bands, including; Babe Wagner Band, Clem Brau Band, Six Fat Dutchman and Don Deane Orchestra, among others. Jim lived with his parents in New Ulm until his father's death in 1970. He then took a job at Boise Cascade in Worthington MN. He married Nancy Marco on July 15, 1972. They lived in Worthington until he began working for AMPI in Clarkfield in 1974. The couple divorced and Jim transferred to AMPI in Paynesville. He retired to St. Cloud in 1991, but returned to work at Fingerhut Corporation in St. Cloud MN until he took a second retirement after several years of employment with the company. In 2009, Jim moved to Rochester MN to be closer to his family. Music was Jim's life; from playing in bands to attending the opera. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, going to fairs and was a train enthusiast. Jim was a faithful member of the Catholic Church throughout his life and served as an usher, lector and Eucharistic minister at different parishes. He was always known to help others in need. Survivors include his son Kris (Laurie) Bertelsen and their children; Katherine, Anna and Rebekah of St. Charles. He was preceded in death by his parents. A Funeral Mass will be 6PM Wednesday at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in St. Charles with the Reverend Kurt Farrell officiating. Cremation will follow with burial at a later date in Calvary Cemetery in St. Charles. Friends may call from 4PM until time of services at the church on Wednesday.
