Irvin L. Angst, 88, died Sunday, October 25, 2009, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN, from complications following a bicycle-car accident. Irvin was born August 31, 1921, in Winona, MN, to Clarence and Helen (Rothering) Angst. Irvin obtained his pilots license in 1937 when he was 16 years old and was taught by Max Conrad. He went to work for the Consolidated Aircraft Co. in San Diego, CA, building airplanes for the war. He served in the Army Air Corp. during WWII, became a flight officer and was being trained to be an air-sea rescue pilot, flying PBY's as the war came to an end. Following the war, he returned to Winona and became a flight instructor. He married Norma Troska on May 31, 1952. Irvin worked at Winona Motor Company before joining his father and brother, Willard in operating the family business, Angst Motor Service, retiring in 1996. Irvin cared for his wife as she battled rheumatoid arthritis and was able to travel around the country with her in their motorhome before she preceded him in death on February 27, 1993. Irvin kept his private pilot license up until the end, enjoyed flying as a hobby and was a member of the Blair Flight Club. He enjoyed riding his bicycle, wintering in Wellton, AZ, playing pool and spending time with his grandchildren. Prior to the accident, he was looking forward to his upcoming Honor Flight from Rochester, MN, to Washington D.C.Survivors include his daughter, Karen (Tim) Scanlon of Plainview, MN; grandchildren Robert and Katie Scanlon; sister, Olive (George) Hittner of Winona, MN; brothers, John (Elaine) Angst of Blair, WI, Robert (Judy) Angst and Richard (Barb) Angst both of Winona, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Norma and two brothers, Willard and LaVern.
