Hjalmer Schiebstad

January 1, 1900 — July 17, 2011

Hoff Funeral and Cremation Service, Houston 507-896-3127HOUSTON, Minn. - Hjalmer Schiebstad, 97, formerly of Yucatan valley, passed away Sunday, July 17, 2011, at Valley View Care and Rehab Center in Houston, Minnesota. He was born June 21, 1914, in Houston County to Edward and Ida (Halvorson) Schiebstad. He grew up on Houge ridge, attending country school and helping out on the farm. Hjalmer lived a good portion of his life as a real Norwegian bachelor farmer. He attended barn dances and was always farming: threshing, caring for livestock, putting up hay, fencing, clearing snow, and generally lending a hand to neighbors and friends. He was proud to have never left the area. On August 11, 1976, at an age when many begin to retire, Hjalmer married Lucille. Their daughter, Ida Jo, was born on July 17, 1979.Hjalmer smiled often. He laughed a lot at the antics of children and animals. He loved to drive, at a meandering pace, to area communities and visit friends and family. He liked auctions, parades, naps in the afternoon, lefse, mowing the yard, tending the garden, Ole and Lena jokes, Oliver tractors, Bonanza, and Little House on the Prairie. He was often seen sitting in the shade out in the yard in Yucatan, watching folks go by on County Road 4. He was stubborn in his devotion to his daughter, wife, family, animals, neighbors, friends, and his independence. No one believed him when he told them his true age.Survivors include his wife, Lucille (Wood) Schiebstad, of Houston, his daughter Ida (James) Drury, of Englewood, Colorado, and many nieces and nephews. Hjalmer was welcomed into heaven by a host of family and friends who went before him, including his parents, his younger sisters Louella (Robert) Todd and Charlotte (Joe) Ernster, and his brother Earl Schiebstad.Hjalmer's funeral will be held at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church, 204 S. Chase Street, Houston on Thursday, July 21, 2011 at 11:00AM. The Rev. Lane Zafke will officiate. Burial will be in the Stone Church Cemetery in rural Houston.Visitors are invited to celebrate a life well-lived at the Hoff Funeral and Cremation Service in Houston, on Wednesday, July 20, 2011 from 5:00PM-8:00PM.
