Helen (Jorde) Walter, 97, of Winona and formerly of Rushford, Minn. died on Sunday, March 1, 2009, at Community Memorial Hospital in Winona. Helen was born on January 16, 1912, in Crystal Valley of Houston County, Minn. to Clinton and Clara (Snure) Burfield. She graduated from Houston High School in 1929, and graduated from LaCrosse Normal School. On June 25, 1932, Helen married G. Theodore Jorde in Money Creek, Minn. The couple farmed in the Houston and Rushford areas until the time of his death on April 28, 1951. Helen then went to Winona Teachers College. She was a teacher at Oak Ridge and Tenborg country schools. On April 7, 1956 Helen married Elmer F. Walter in Nashua, Iowa. They lived in Winona, Minn., Amery, Wis., and San Benito, Tex. Elmer died on October 10, 1981. Helen was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church in Winona. She is survived by three daughters: Alice Olson of Rochester, Minn., Nancy (Myron) Danielson of Hayfield, Minn., and Janet (Robert) Koljord of LaCrescent, Minn.; one stepson, Don (Patricia) Walter of Fort Worth, Tex.; one daughter-in-law, Alice Easter-Walter of Loveland, Colo.; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; four step granddaughters; and three step great-grandchildren. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, a daughter in infancy, one son, James, one brother, two sisters, one grandson, Justin, and one great-grandson, Kyle. The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4, at Hoff Funeral Homes - Rushford Chapel with the Rev. James Scaife officiating. Burial will be in the Money Creek Cemetery in Money Creek, Minn. Friends may call from 1:00 p.m until the time of the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.
