Helen Bundy

Helen Viola Bundy, 102, a longtime Lewiston resident, died Sunday, January 28, 2007 at Lake Winona Manor. She was born December 27, 1904 in Meridan Township of Steele County, MN to August H. and Elfreida (Conrath) Schmidt. After graduating from Owatonna High School in 1924 she attended Teacher Training Class, graduating in 1925. Helen taught school in Steele County for 1 & ½ years. In 1926, Helen married Milo C. Bundy. They moved to Lewiston in 1940 and became an active part of the community. Helen and Milo operated Bundy Meat Market for 18 years. She then worked for Etta Del (now Lewiston Villa) for nine years and in food service in Lewiston Schools for 13 years before retiring at age 78. She was active in the Lewiston Presbyterian Church, teaching Sunday school; also serving as chairperson for the Women's Association; a member and chairperson of a study circle and served on the Board of Elders. She was an active member of the Berean Bible Class. When the first PTA was organized in Lewiston, she became president. Helen was the first woman elected to the Lewiston School Board, serving two three-year terms. She was a volunteer driver for SEMCAC for 10 years. In 1987 she was selected as outstanding senior citizen of Winona County. Helen is survived by four sons; Kenneth C. Bundy of Savannah, GA, David D. (Mary) Bundy of Richfield, Gary L. (Virgie) Bundy of St. Paul and Paul D. (Janice) Bundy of Bucker, MO, 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death in 1964 by her husband, by her daughter, Viola Mae Fort in September of 2000 and two sisters. Funeral services will be 11AM Friday at Grace Presbyterian Church in Winona with the Reverend Tim Gerarden officiating. Burial will be in Lewiston Public Cemetery.
