The funeral for Hazel Janet (Michael) Zitzow will be Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in St. Charles, with the Rev. Michael Hart officiating. Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery in St. Charles following the service.Hazel Zitzow, 86 of Dover, a retired dairy farmer and homemaker, died peacefully, surrounded by her family on Jan. 1, 2011 at the Chosen Valley Care Center in Chatfield, MN.She was born October 29, 1924 in rural St. Charles, MN to Albert and Alma (Pheil) Michael. She grew up north of St. Charles and graduated from St. Charles High School. She attended the Hatty Boyd teaching school and then taught school in northern rural St. Charles.She married Harold Zitzow on August 24, 1944 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in St. Charles. They were married 59years. Harold died on January 1, 2004. They farmed north of St. Charles until moving to Dover Township in 1950.She was a lifelong member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church where she served on the LWML, Mary Martha Circle and Project Compassion. She was a member of the Here and There Homemakers group and met Wednesday mornings with a ladies group in St. Charles. She was a loving Mother and Grandmother who enjoyed being part of her family's activities. She was a MN Twins fan; she also enjoyed painting, writing poetry, crafting, quilting, crossword puzzles, playing cards, and took many trips with Harold, Elvira and Jim to see the country. Baking was her specialty; she made wedding cakes for many people and was famous for her chocolate chip cookies and Christmas cookies. She loved her cat Snickers.Survivors include five daughters: Beverly (Ellis) Ruesink of Harmony, Jan Zitzow of Duluth, Marilyn Zitzow of Dodge Center, Pam (Wayne) Hahn of Goodhue, Michelle (Ron) Heins of Eyota and two sons: Ron (Jan) Zitzow of St. Cloud and Ken (Bonnie) Zitzow of Dover. She is also survived by twenty-two grandchildren, ten great- grandchildren, two sisters Margaret Martinson and Elvira Wilson both of St. Charles, and three sisters in law Eleanor Lester, Ileen Zitzow and Elaine Unrue. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two sisters Violet Janzow and Neva Dreher.Visitation will be at Hoff Funeral Home in St. Charles on Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and at the church on Wednesday one hour before the service.
