RUSHFORD, Minn. Gusta J. Highum, 92, of Rushford, died Friday, March 12, 2004, at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford. Gusta was born on October 3, 1911, in Rushford to John and Ida (Laumb) Bratland. She grew up in Rushford and graduated from Rushford High School. On February 26, 1931, she married Arthur Highum in Rushford. Gusta was the head cook at the Rushford Schools for many years and also worked at the Rushford Bakery. She lived in her home until 10 months ago when she moved to the nursing home. Her interests included flowers, crocheting, quilting, and especially her church and her family. Gusta was a member of the Rushford Lutheran Church and the ladies aide there. She is survived by three daughters: Ione (Myron) Olson of Bloomington, Minn., Eileen (Orley) Koljord of Lanesboro, Minn. and Audrey (Sam) Sands of Mission Viejo, Cal.; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren: Scott (Jill) Olson, Lynne Clarke and her daughter, Jessica, Lisa Koljord, Lee Ann (Bob) Lynden and her daughters, Megan and Michelle, Leon Koljord, Tracey (Stan) VanGent and her children, Gunnar and Marika, Tom (Rhonda) Sands and his children, Sydney and Grant, and Todd (Karri) Sands. Gusta was preceded in death by her husband, two sisters and one brother. The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 15, at the Rushford Lutheran Church. Burial will be in the Rushford Lutheran Cemetery. Hoff Funeral Homes - Rushford Chapel is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
