ALTURAGregory "John" Majerus Jr.,74, of Altura, died Monday, June 2, 2014 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse.John was born July 11, 1939 to Gregory "Gregor" John Sr. and Rosalie Elizabeth (Gage) Majerus on Fischer Hill in Whitewater Township. John and his family moved to Winona then to Goodview, Trout Valley, Oak Ridge, and in 1961 the family bought "The Farm" in Norton Township (Altura). On December 13, 1975 he married Janet Elizabeth Stark and together they raised their daughter, Nicole Renee.John raised turkeys for many years, worked for Chrysler Motors, and most recently was a custodian on the I-90 rest stop near Lewiston. Most prominently, he worked as a welder/fabricator at McMurdo Station, Antarctica from 1991 to 2005. Every August, John would make the 23 hour trip and would stay until February. He even had the opportunity to visit the South Pole. When John wasn't in Antarctica he enjoyed woodworking, watching the History channel and Duck Dynasty. He also enjoyed flower gardening and was at one time a part of the Winona 4-Wheeler club. He also took pleasure in reading. He was a frequent visitor to the bookstore, Barnes & Nobel. Most of all, John was a family man and enjoyed spending time with them, especially his grandchildren, Charlie, Will, and Rosie.John is survived by his wife, Janet (nee Stark) of Altura; daughter, Nicole (Guy) Heinz of Altura; grandchildren, Charles "Charlie", William "Will", and Rosalie "Rosie"; brother, Nick (Mary) Majerus; mother-in-law, Alice Stark; nieces, Deborah Knaup and Michelle Tweed; and many other nieces, nephews, brother and sister-in-laws, aunts, uncle, cousins and friends.He is preceded in death by his father-in-law, Conrad Stark.Memorials are preferred to Our Savior Moravian Church in Altura. Services for John will be held 3:00 p.m., Sunday, June 8, 2014 at Our Savior's Moravian Church in Altura with the Reverend Dave Sobek officiating. Visitation will be from 1-3 p.m. at the church
