WINONAGlenn Lyle Sholes, 87 of Winona, died Saturday, January 3, 2015 at Lake Winona Manor.Glenn, the 7th of 10 children, was born at home in Money Creek on September 26, 1927 to Harley and Edna (Germanson) Sholes. His siblings walked 3 miles to a nearby country school. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on October 18, 1945 and served four years before being honorably discharged on October 17, 1949. His bunkmate in the Navy carried a photo of his sister, Evelyn Laugen, and Glenn loved her at first sight. They were united in marriage on January 25, 1950 and would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this month.To care for his growing family, Glenn pumped gas and worked little jobs on cars at Bunke's Apco Service. Later, he purchased the fuel oil business from Bunke's Apco - West. He delivered fuel oil to families in the area for over 35 years before his retirement. In his later years, Glenn enjoyed picking blackberries, cracking walnuts and hickory nuts, stopping at rummage sales, and canning fruits and vegetables with Evelyn, and socializing with friends at McDonald's East. He was an honest, humble, fair, and frugal man who will be missed dearly by his family.Glenn is survived by his wife, Evelyn Sholes of Winona; children, Priscilla Colby of Winona; Gloria (Donald) Moger of Winona; Sharon (fiancé Dave Dennis) Whetstone of Winona; Wendy (Jim) Ashelin of Winona; Adrian (Laurie) Sholes of La Crescent, and Michael Sholes of Winona; 9 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents; 7 sisters; 2 brothers; and an infant grandson, Mitchell Sholes.Memorial service will be held at 3pm, Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at Hoff Celebration of Life Center in Goodview led by Funeral Celebrant Brittany Horton. Visitation will begin at 1pm. Military honors provided by the VFW Post 1287 will follow the service.
