Gladys Burfield

Gladys Rosemary Burfield, 82, formerly of Houston, died Sunday, March 16, 2014 at Northgate Care Center in Waukon, IA.Gladys was born August 1, 1931 in La Crosse to George and Violet (Viner) Snow. She graduated from La Crosse Central High School. Gladys married Russell Burfield, spending their married life in the Houston area. They farmed in Perkins Valley until Russell's retirement when they moved to Money Creek and eventually into Houston. Russell passed away in 1990. Gladys eventually moved to Sheldon and then to New Albin, IA to live with her daughter, Jodi and her husband, Randy. She worked for many years at Trane Company and was a longtime member of Cross of Christ Lutheran Church. While living in Money Creek, Gladys was a swimming instructor at the Money Creek Haven Campground. She also drove bus for the Houston Schools. Gladys was a devoted foster parent for Houston County for many years, caring for dozens of children. One young man in particular, Jerry Kurtz, who became a very special and treasured part of the family. Gladys loved to play Bingo and was an incredibly proud grandmother and great-grandmother. Her family meant the world to her.She is survived by her son, Terry Burfield of Gilman, WI; daughter, Jodi (Randy) Toedter of New Albin, IA; four grandchildren, Chad (Sara) Toedter, Chase Toedter Chuck Burfield and Cathy Burfield; four great-grandchildren, Kyle & Eve Toedter and Mariah & Ethan Burfield. Gladys was preceded in death by her husband; parents; daughter, Susan Gray; grandson, Danny Burfield and brother, Bill Snow.Memorial Service will be 1 p.m., Saturday, March 22, 2014 at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church with the Reverend Lane Zaffke officiating. Burial will follow at Money Creek Cemetery.
