Altura, Gerald W. "Jerry" Nelson, 84, of Rochester and formerly of Altura died Sunday, October 13th at Golden Living Center in St. Charles. Jerry was born March 15, 1929 in Altura to George and Irene (Thompson) Nelson. He graduated from Lewiston High School in 1947. Jerry met Bev Boelter at a high school basketball game in Rochester. They married on September 18, 1951 in Rochester and later made their home in Altura. Jerry served in the U.S. Army from 1951 -1953 as a mechanic in the Korean Conflict. Following his return from Korea Jerry worked with his father George at the Nelson garage in Altura. He also worked as a part time rural mail carrier and later became a full time carrier, retiring in 1990. Jerry enjoyed many hours in his garden, growing flowers and vegetables. He also enjoyed collecting items he bought at local auctions. He is a member of Jehovah Evangelical Lutheran Church in Altura and the St. Charles American Legion Post. Survivors include his wife Bev, three children; Cindy Nelson of Jacksonville, FL, Bill Nelson of Plymouth and Kenny (Lisa) Nelson of Stewartville, six grandchildren; Chad, Tricia, Ben, Emilee, Brittany and Nate, a brother Dave (Carrole) Nelson of Altura and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Donna Cheesman. Funeral Services will be 11AM Saturday at Jehovah Evangelical Lutheran Church in Altura with the Reverends Michael A. Lindemann and M. John Dermé officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 9-11 AM Saturday at the church.
