George J. Tweedy, 66, died February 19, 2011, in Chicago, IL, due to complications from a fall. George was born October 23, 1944, in Rochester, MN, to Dr. John A. and Jane (Austin) Tweedy. He attended public schools in Winona and received his bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota in 1966. After a brief encounter with law school at the University of Texas Austin as well as basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, he returned to the Midwest and began a career in commodities. He worked for various trading companies in Chicago as well as Los Angeles, retiring from M.F. Global in 2009. George was always happy to come home, see old friends, and get out on the river. He spent many summers life guarding and teaching swimming on Latsch Island as well as the Fountain City Pool. Georges well developed memory and sense of humor made him a great teller of jokes and stories. Almost every situation was made better with laughter. He will be missed by those he left smiling.George was preceded in death by his father; birth mother; brother, James; and step-mother, Harriet Tweedy.Survivors include his sisters, Kathryn (Frank LessArd) Tweedy of Winona, MN, Marion (Frederic) West of Kooskia, ID, Margaret Tweedy of Buffalo City, WI; and brother, David (Amy) Tweedy and nephews, Jason and Brendan of Steamboat Springs, CO; and sister-in-law, Robin Latta-Tweedy of Branford, CT.George will be remembered at a memorial service along with his step-mother, Harriet Tweedy, on Saturday, November 12th, at 1:00pm, at First Congregational Church UCC with the Reverend Timothy Forester officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon until the time of service at the church on Saturday.
