George Albert Evans

St. Charles, George A. Evans, 97, of St. Charles, died Sunday December 7, 2014 at Golden Living Center in St. Charles. George was born May 28, 1917 in Chicago, IL to Edward and Emma (Ryan) Evans. He met Leora Lehnertz at her aunts home in Chicago, as he was delivering ice and told her "I'm gonna marry you." They married on August 11, 1940 in Chicago. He served in the Navy during WWII, stationed on a supply ship in the pacific, refueling ships. They later moved to St. Charles and George owned Milky Way Transport, then drove truck for Kujak Transport and Patterson Quarries. George and Leora enjoyed many motorcycle trips on his Honda Gold Wing. He enjoyed cars and frequently would trade in for better vehicle. In his retirement he would wake at 4:30 AM to meet his friends for coffee at Hy-Vee in Rochester. Following coffee they would play volleyball at the YMCA, playing well in to his 90's. He belonged to the St. Charles Veteran's of War and American Legion Posts. He entered the Golden Living Center two years ago and would frequently say to workers and resident's "It's my birthday, can I have a hug?" George is survived by his five children;, Marie Vicere (Jim Becker) of Naples, FL, Edward (Cathy) Evans of St. Charles, John Evans of Dodge Center, Richard (Cindy) Evans and Shirley (Gary) Neumann both of St. Charles, nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and three step great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Leora in 2008, a grandson Tony, two brothers and three sisters. Services to celebrate George's life will be 11AM Friday at Hoff Funeral Service in St. Charles, led by Funeral Celebrant Jenny Hoff. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 9:30 until time of services. A reception at the funeral home will follow services.
