Gene Schumacher, 84 of Altura, died Sunday, April 5, 2015 at Lake Winona Manor.Gene was born February 26, 1931 in Winona County to Lloyd and Alice (Hilke) Schumacher. He attended Lewiston High School and the Minnesota School of Business in Minneapolis, graduating as a Public accountant.Gene was married on October 20, 1955 to Marcella Gaulke at Grace Lutheran Church, Stockton, MN. They made their home in Altura, MN and he worked as a DHIA supervisor in Winona Co. and was recognized for 26 years of service. He also worked for the City of Altura as city clerk and as manager of the Altura Liquor Store. He then moved on to manage Schumacher Transport in Lewiston and later Bud Meyer Truckline Tank Division also in Lewiston and Lake City, eventually retiring from Renk Trucking of Winona. He also managed the Altura Community Retirement Home from July of 1990 until 2014.Gene was also a charter member of the Altura Lions Club and received the President's award and recently an award for thirty years of service. He served on the board of Red Wing vocational truck driving school and held the president's office at Grace Lutheran church for many years until the time he became ill. His hobbies included bowling and camping, and he enjoyed mowing lawns for many in the Altura area.He is survived by his wife Marcella and son Gary (Lynda); step granddaughters Michelle (Chris) Nelson of Winona, Wendy (Johnn) Hedges of Cumming, GA, and Tanya (Jon) Moore of Mooresville, NC.; step great grandchildren Kayla Hedges of Frankfort, KY, Laura Hedges of Cumming, GA, Barry and Garrett Nelson of Winona; sisters Kathleen Ressie of Winona, Dixie Maus of Rollingstone; twin brother Glen (Helen) of Altura and sister-in-law Florence Schumacher of Winona, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceding him in death were his parents, a brother Ray, brothers-in-law George Ressie and Jack Maus, a niece Jean and a nephew Ronnie.Funeral Service will be 11 a.m., Friday, April 10, 2015 at Grace Lutheran Church in Stockton with the Reverend Matthew Lorfeld and the Reverend Ronald Prigge officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7pm Thursday, April 9 at the church and one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the Moravian Hebron Cemetery in Altura, MN.
