St. Charles, Ellen Anne Coulson, 89, of St. Charles died Saturday, October 17, 2009 at Golden Living Center in St. Charles. She was born November 26, 1919 in Saratoga Township of Winona County to Frank and Harterowe (Cox) Gerry. Ellen married Wendell F. Coulson on September 20, 1937 in St. Charles. They farmed in rural Dover. Ellen graduated from the Hattie Boyd Normal Training and went on to receive a Bachelor of Science and a Masters Degree in education from Winona State Teachers College. Ellen taught school for 24 & 1/2 years at Dover-Eyota Schools, retiring in 1989. Wendell died December 20, 1991. Ellen moved in to St. Charles in January of 2000. She later moved to St. Charles Assisted Living before moving to Golden Living Center in 2008. She was a member of St. Charles United Church of Christ and the church choir for over 50 years. She was also a member for more than 50 years of the Sunshine Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, and was a Past Worthy Matron. For many years Ellen shared her love of music with residents of Lewiston Villa, St. Charles Assisted Living and Golden Living Center. Survivors include three sons; Bill (Shirley) Coulson of Ohio, Gerry (Wilma) Coulson of Oronoco and Mandell (Rose) Coulson of Dover, three daughters; Nola (Bill) Salisbury of Dover, Ann (Dale) Pierce of Utica, and Wendy (Rick) Jones of West Concord, 19 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband a brother Reuben Gerry and a sister Grace Busian preceded her in death. Services will be at 11AM Friday at Hoff Funeral & Cremation Service in St. Charles. An Eastern Star Service will begin at 11AM with Funeral Services following. Jason Chamberlain of St. Charles United Church of Christ will officiate. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery in St. Charles. A reception will follow at the funeral home. Friends may call from 5-8 PM Thursday and one hour before services Friday at Hoff Funeral Home & Cremation Services in St. Charles.
