Elizabeth "Betty" Kalmes

January 10, 1927 — February 6, 2016

Elizabeth "Betty" (Cuturia) Kalmes, 89 of Rollingstone, passed away on Saturday, February 6, 2016 at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse.
Betty was born on Jaunuary 10, 1927 in Winona to Ralph and Eva (Rekowski) Cuturia and graduated from Cathedral High School in 1945. After graduation she worked as a clerk for Prudential Life Insurance Company. In 1946, she met her soul mate at the out-door roller skating rink in Winona, a popular spot in the good ol' days. Betty and Eugene Kalmes were married August 28, 1948 at the St. Thomas Pro-Cathedral Church in Winona. They lived in Winona until 1952 and then moved to rural Rollingstone to take over the family farm. The young family became forever farmers. Family, faith and farming were the three most important things in Betty's life.
Betty and Eugene were active members of Holy Trinity Catholic Church. She was active in the Rollingstone Rural Rockets 4-H Club, Rollingstone Senior Citizens "500" Club, she served on the Winona County Human Services Board and was a member of the Winona County SWCD Ladies.
Betty took pride in her family, home, garden, baking, canning, helping with chores and always loved to entertain. She enjoyed making her Grandma Betty's Bears for each granddaughter. Betty was instrumental in Eugene's community involvement success. She was a very loving caregiver to Eugene throughout his illness and up until his death in January of 2015. Her two pet parakeets were very special to her and she raised young parakeets to give to family and friends.
Left to carry on her legacy are her four sons, Robert (Anita) of Rollingstone, Daniel (Carol) of Onalaska, WI, Thomas (Veronica) of Eyota, and Arthur (Jenny) of Burnsville; two daughters, Kathryn (Mark) Brandt of Osseo, WI and Kristine (Brad) Phelps of Ringgold, GA; and daughter-in-law, Betty Kalmes. Eugene and Betty were blessed with 23 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and three more on the way; and one sister, Lucille. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene; brother, Robert; parents; and grandson, Jakob Phelps.
Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m., Friday, February 12, 2016 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with the Reverend William Kulas and Reverend Paul Breza concelebrating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m., Thursday at Hoff Celebration of Life Center in Goodview and one hour prior to mass at church.
