St. Charles, Dr. John R. "Dick" Flanary, 82 of Burnt Store Marina, Florida, a St. Charles native died March 25, 2008 in Florida, following an extended illness. He was born December 12, 1925 in Rochester to William and Josephine (O'Keefe) Flanary. Dr. Flanary graduated from St. Charles High School in 1943 and served 3 ½ years in the US Navy during WWII, stationed in the South Pacific Theatre. He received his undergraduate at St. Mary's University in Winona and his medical degree at Marquette University School of Medicine in Milwaukee in 1955. Dr. Flanary worked at Olmsted Clinic in Rochester, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Milwaukee and at Community Memorial Hospital in Menomonee Falls, WI. After retiring he moved to Punta Gorda, Florida in 1998 where he could be close to the ocean. Dr. Flanary loved to sail, which included places like the Great Lakes and the Atlantic. He will be remembered as an aggressive, to say the least, yachtsman and for captaining his boat "The Wild Irish". Dr Flanary will be greatly missed by his wife Almarie, sons; Thomas, Michael, Timothy and Patrick, and daughters, Susan Reidy and Kelly Ann Nitschke; five step-children , a brother, Dr. Lawrence (Annette) Flanary; sister, Jo (Frank) Aiken; sisters-in-law Margaret and June. He was preceded in death by his parents, fist wife Ilene and brothers Robert Flanary and Dr. James Flanary. A Memorial Mass will be 2PM Wednesday June 18, 2008 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in St. Charles with the Reverend James A. Callahan. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in St. Charles.
