Dorothy Smith, 88, a long time resident of St. Charles, died Saturday, November 13 at the Chosen Valley Care Center in Chatfield where she had been a resident for three years.Dorothy Augusta Martha Fleischfresser was born May 3, 1922 on the family farm in Wiscoy Valley, Winona County, to William and Evelyn (Pruka) Fleischfresser. Dorothy grew up in Wiscoy Valley and married Thomas E. Smith in the Hart parsonage on January 31, 1941. Dorothy and Tom lived in Winona until after WWII and then made St. Charles their home for the next 60 years. Tom was a contract milk hauler in the area for 42 years. Dorothy was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Ladies Aid, and Homemakers. She was a life member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, and held many positions including President and was Poppy Chairwoman for over 40 years. Dorothy was also a member of the Eastern Star. Dorothy and Tom enjoyed traveling, especially to Alaska, Hawaii, and the Panama Canal. Dorothy was an avid Dayton's shopper and never missed her weekly hair appointment.Survivors include a son, Darrel (Rose) Smith, St. Charles, and two daughters, Carol Ann (Richard) Tiede, Rochester, and Tammy Smith-Miller, St. Charles. Grandchildren are Tom (Michelle) and Scott (Kathleen) Tiede and Michael and Kristin Miller. Great grandchildren are Hannah, Charlie, Mia, Ava, Ike, and Max Tiede, and a brother LaVane Fleischfresser of Fountain. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom, in 2005 and a brother, Elmer and a sister Vivian Schafer.Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 17 at the St. Charles United Methodist Church with the Reverend Jean-Claude Duncan officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery in St. Charles. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
